Trial reel insights not showing: what you get and when

By the Visteria team · Updated 28 October 2026 · 6 min read

Trial reel insights usually aren’t missing, they just aren’t ready: Instagram shows a trial’s numbers in the reel viewer about 24 hours after you post it, and compares them with your earlier trials. If you need numbers sooner, or numbers Instagram never hands to other apps — the follower split, the retention graph, profile visits — they come from a screenshot of the Insights screen.

The first day of a trial is the part you most want to watch, and it is the part the app shows least. Here is what you can see, when, and from where.

Why are my trial reel insights not showing?

Three reasons cover almost every case:

  • It is too early. Instagram says insights for a trial appear about 24 hours after it goes out. Before that, the reel viewer may show little or nothing.
  • You are looking in the wrong place. A trial isn’t on your grid or in your profile’s Reels tab until it is shared, so open the trial reel itself and look for its insights there.
  • The number you want isn’t in the view you opened. Instagram describes the trial view as views, likes, comments and shares, compared with your earlier trials. The follower split, traffic sources and retention graph sit on the reel’s full Insights screen.

What does Instagram give you, and from where?

There are three sources for a trial’s numbers, and they don’t cover the same things. The middle column is what an analytics app can read through Instagram’s official API; the last column is what only the Insights screen shows.

Meta’s developer documentation lists reach, views, skip rate, watch time, likes, comments, shares and saves for reels, and says follows and profile visits aren’t available for them; it offers no follower/non-follower breakdown for a reel. That is why the last column exists. (The API calls the paper-plane count “shares”; we call it Sends, as the app does — see sends vs shares vs saves.)

What we see in our own data: on @tomeescapes (data as of 28 October 2026), all 24 of the 24 tagged trial reels came back from the API with reach, skip rate, average watch time and Sends — 370 readings in all. For the 3 trials we tracked from the first hour, the first reading with any reach arrived after a median of 0.9 hours, well before the app’s own view. Three trials is an early number; it says the API can be quick, not that it always is. Meta’s documentation warns that numbers can lag by up to 48 hours.

What can a screenshot tell you that the API can’t?

The Insights screen for a single reel has the numbers that explain who watched and where they left. For a trial, the most useful are:

  • Followers vs non-followers. A trial should be close to all non-followers until you share it. If it isn’t, some followers found it through a DM or an audio page, and the numbers are mixed. More in followers vs non-followers.
  • The retention graph. The only place that shows the second people left; see how to read the retention graph.
  • Where views came from. Reels tab, Explore, audio pages: useful when a trial suddenly picks up.
  • Profile visits and follows. Whether strangers who liked the trial went on to look at you.

What we see in our own data: we have Insights screenshots for 4 of those 24 trials so far, 3 of them with the follower split. Every one of those read as all non-followers, rounded — which is what a trial is meant to be, and a useful check that nothing leaked to followers before we chose to share.

When should you take the screenshot?

Take one when the insights first appear, around the 24-hour mark, and another once the trial has flattened — usually within 72 hours, the window in which Instagram can share it for you. The first shows how the test batch behaved; the second shows the whole run. If you share the trial to followers, take one just before, because the numbers after the share mix two audiences. For how a trial’s views build up hour by hour, see how long trial reels take to get views.

What should you check, in order?

  1. Has it been about 24 hours? If not, the app may simply not be showing numbers yet.
  2. Reach and skip rate against your other trials. The first two things to read, and the first an analytics app can give you.
  3. Likes and Sends per viewer in the first batch, against your usual trial.
  4. The follower split, from the Insights screen: still all non-followers?
  5. The retention graph, if the trial stopped early, to see where the first batch left. Then read why trial reels stop after the test batch.

Visteria reads every trial through the API every 30 minutes while it’s moving, so you see the first batch before the app does, and reads the follower split, sources and retention graph from the Insights screenshots you upload. See how it works.

Questions people ask

How long until trial reel insights show up?

Instagram says about 24 hours after you post the trial. Before that the reel viewer may show little or nothing; that is normal, not a fault with the reel.

Can analytics apps see trial reel numbers?

Through Instagram’s official API an app can read reach, views, skip rate, watch time, likes, comments, Sends and saves for a trial. The follower split, traffic sources, retention graph, profile visits and follows aren’t in the API, so they come from a screenshot of the Insights screen.

Why does my trial reel show some followers in the split?

Trials go to non-followers first, but some followers can still come across one through a DM or a page that groups reels by audio, location or filter. A few percent is normal; a lot means the numbers mix two audiences.
