Sends vs shares vs saves on Instagram
On Instagram, a “send” and a “share” are the same number: how many times people used the paper-plane button to send your reel to someone or add it to a story. A save is different: someone kept the reel for themselves. Sends say “someone else should see this”; saves say “I want this later”.
The naming is the confusing part. Insights shows the paper-plane icon, the API calls it shares, and Instagram’s own advice talks about sends. Visteria says sends, because that is what the button does.
What is the difference between sends, shares and saves?
| Number | What it counts | What it suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Sends | Taps on the paper plane: sent in a DM or added to a story | Viewers thought of someone else |
| Shares | The same count, under the API’s name | Same as sends |
| Saves | Taps on the bookmark | Viewers want to come back to it |
| Likes | Taps on the heart | Viewers approved, with the least effort |
Why does Instagram care about sends?
A send puts the reel in front of someone new, chosen by a person rather than the algorithm. Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, has said sends per reach is one of the strongest signals for showing a reel to people who don’t follow you. That makes sends the number to watch when a reel is meant to find new people, and saves the one to watch when a reel is meant to be useful — a route, a recipe, a list.
How many sends and saves is normal?
Read both per 1,000 accounts reached, so a big reel and a small one are comparable, and compare with your own reels.
What we see in our own data: across 62 organic reels on @tomeescapes (not trials, collabs or boosted; data as of 27 October 2026), the median reel had 2.9 sends and 4.9 saves per 1,000 accounts reached. But 22 of the 62 had no sends at all, and only 18 had more sends than saves. Added up over all 74,779 accounts reached, sends came to 6.2 per 1,000 — more than saves at 4.4 — because a few reels collected most of the sends.
| Per 1,000 reached | Organic reels (62) | Trial reels (22) |
|---|---|---|
| Sends, median reel | 2.9 | 3 |
| Saves, median reel | 4.9 | 5.2 |
| Sends, all reels added up | 6.2 | 3.3 |
| Saves, all reels added up | 4.4 | 4.6 |
| Reels with more sends than saves | 18 | 3 |
So on this account saves are steady and sends are lumpy: most reels get a few, a handful get many. Trials, shown only to strangers, got about as many saves per viewer as organic reels, but their sends never added up the same way. One account, so read it as a pattern to check on yours.
Do sends or saves go with more reach?
On the organic reels above, the reels that reached more people had a slightly higher send rate, and a lower save rate. That fits the idea that sends carry a reel to new people while saves don’t, but the link is weak and it runs both ways: a reel that reaches more strangers also gets saved by a smaller share of them. Don’t read it as proof; read it as a reason to look at sends first when you ask why a reel travelled. For what big reach does and doesn’t bring, see reels getting views but no followers.
What should you check, in order?
- Sends per 1,000 reached against your usual. A reel at several times your usual send rate is one people passed on.
- Saves per 1,000 reached against your usual. High saves with low sends is a useful reel, not a viral one.
- The first batch, not the lifetime totals, for trials: when to share a trial reel shows why.
- Reach. A few hundred viewers make one send look like a big rate; see reach vs views.
- What the high-send reels have in common: the place, the joke, the line of text someone would want to forward.
How do you get more sends?
Make the reel about someone the viewer knows. “Send this to the friend who…” works because it names the person; so does a place people want to visit together, or a tip that solves a shared problem. Test it one reel at a time and compare sends per 1,000 reached with your usual, not the raw count.
Visteria shows sends and saves per viewer for every reel against your usual, and in the first batch of a trial, so you can see which reels people passed on. See what you get.
Questions people ask
Are sends and shares the same on Instagram?
Yes. Both count taps on the paper-plane button, sending the reel in a DM or adding it to a story. Insights shows the icon, the API calls it shares, and Instagram’s advice calls them sends.
Which matters more, sends or saves?
For reaching new people, sends: Instagram has said sends per reach is one of the strongest signals for showing a reel to non-followers. Saves say a reel was useful, which matters for reels meant to be kept.
What is a good send rate on Instagram Reels?
Compare with your own reels per 1,000 accounts reached. On one small travel account, the median organic reel had 2.9 sends per 1,000 reached, and many reels had none.
